1. More fully integrate the BA (Gen) into the Faculty of Arts (Recommendation 1) To that end: Develop a budgetary mechanism to create incentives for departments to assign faculty to courses. (Recommendation 1a)

  1. Completed. The BA(Gen) program has moved fully under the Faculty of SSH, allowing departments to freely allocate faculty between on-site and distance courses, including dual delivery modes. Minimum objectives have not been set, however, in AY 21/22, 37 of 80 courses in the program were taught by permanent faculty (46%), a vast improvement.
  2. Completed. We offer 1 and a half credits for dual delivery/hybrid courses. Distance courses are interchangeable with on-site courses, with workload assignments for the former are often preferred by faculty members.
  3. Completed. Instructors are now better trained, and we are moving away from “clé en main” courses to bespoke courses where instructors can exercise their academic freedom. Lunch & Learn sessions on pedagogy are offered regularly and during COVID session on how to efficiently use Moodle were offered.
  4. Completed. We have access to Zoom and BBB as well as 4-5 new classrooms equipped for dual delivery/hybrid classes.

Ongoing. 15 new CIS personnel will be hired to support IT needs at RMC and other CMCs. However, in 2020 a new model was adopted whereby CIS was centralized at CDA HQ and removed from RMC authority.

On 1 July 2020, DCS was stood down and the instructional designers (ID) were moved into a new Training and Learning Support Group under the VPA. Duties of the IDs have been revised and at the same time, more academic freedom has been accorded instructors, decreasing ID workload.
9. Ensure that contract instructor compensation is in keeping with practices at peer institutions. (Recommendation 3a)

DL course rates have increased at 5% per year for the first two assessment periods to close the gap, compared to an average 2% per year for other courses.
10. Find means to compensate contract faculty for hours worked after the exam. (Recommendation 3b)

Completed. Contractors cannot work after the end of contract. Contract lengths have been extended to include the supplemental examination marking. Any situations beyond that require a separate contract to be raised or for the work to be assigned to a permanent faculty member.
