Le capitaine Van Veen s’est enrôlé dans la Force régulière des Forces armées canadiennes (FAC) en août 2004 en tant que militaire du rang (MR) dans la spécialité de chercheur en communications. Il a occupé divers postes opérationnels à la SFC Leitrim, axés sur différents domaines du renseignement d'origine électromagnétique (code Morse, radar transhorizon, communications par satellite, données cellulaires). En 2010, il a été déployé en Afghanistan au sein d'un détachement de drones à titre d'opérateur de guerre électronique.

À son retour de mission, il a été affecté à Recherche et développement pour la défense (RDDC) - Ottawa où il a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec l’équipe de recherche du Dr Derek Elsaesser et du Dr Will Reed dans le cadre d’une étude pluriannuelle sur la guerre électronique, qui s’est conclu par des essais en conditions réelles à Kingston (Ontario) et à Woomera (Australie). Ces expérimentations ont fait appel à des technologies de guerre électronique développées à l’interne et appliquées à des scénarios conçus par le capitaine Van Veen. Son travail collaboratif avec les forces armées australiennes a contribué au développement de nouvelles capacités de fusion de données dans le domaine des guerre électronique, essentielles durant leurs opérations en Afghanistan. Par la suite, il a apporté son soutien à RDDC Toronto concernant des travaux de recherche portant sur les stations de contrôle au sol pour drones.

Avant d'être commissionné comme officier de sélection du personnel (OSP), le capitaine Van Veen occupait le rang de caporal-chef (Cplc) en tant que Spécialiste en conduit et entretien des véhicule de combat au sein du 21e régiment de guerre électronique à Kingston en Ontario. Après avoir obtenu son baccalauréat dans le cadre du Programme de formation universitaire des militaires du rang (PFUMR), il a poursuivi ses études avec une maîtrise à l'Université Carleton, où il est actuellement candidat au doctorat. Son rôle d'OSP l'a amené à se déplacer à travers le Canada dans différents centres d’évaluation et afin d’apporter un soutien opérationnel à de nombreuses bases, tout en contribuant à des travaux de recherche pour la Direction générale de la recherche et de l'analyse du personnel militaire (DGRPAM).

Son parcours l’a conduit à son poste actuel de chargé de cours au sein de la Faculté des sciences militaires du Collège militaire royal du Canada (CMR). Ses intérêts de recherche portent notamment sur le bien-être, la philosophie des sciences, l’éthique et divers sujets liés à la psychologie industrielle et organisationnelle. Il possède une expérience en méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives ainsi que des méthodes de recherche mixtes.
